How to use it — worked example

For the numbers 12, 18, 22, 30, 41: the count is 5 and the sum is 123. The mean is 123 ÷ 5 = 24.6. Sorted, the numbers are 12, 18, 22, 30, 41, so the middle value — the median — is 22. No value repeats, so there is no mode. The range runs from 12 to 41. Try your own list: test scores, monthly expenses, or race times all work the same way.

Mean vs median vs mode — which one do you need?

Use the mean when every value should count equally, such as an average test score. Use the median when one extreme value would distort the picture — for example, average income in a group where one person earns far more than everyone else. Use the mode when you want the most common value, such as the most popular shoe size in a shop. If your mean and median are far apart, that gap itself tells you something: the data is skewed by outliers, and the median is usually the fairer summary.
